  • Measuring output in the Information Communication and Telecommunications industries: 2016

    Presents initial findings from a review of data sources and methods used in estimating output of the Information Communication and Telecommunications Industries, with a focus on the Telecommunications Industry. This review was conducted in collaboration with the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Ofcom, ONS Research Fellows, members of the academia and industry experts, and concludes that the quality adjustment of prices of technology products should be further developed to improve GDP and productivity estimates.

  • Experimental data on the management practices of manufacturing businesses in Great Britain: 2016

    In 2016 ONS launched a pilot survey of British manufacturing businesses to collect information on their management practices for the first time. This paper presents information on the design and initial results of the survey, focusing on descriptive statistics on the distribution of structured management practices across various characteristics of manufacturing businesses in Great Britain. The results of this pilot survey suggest that on average large businesses and multinationals have more structured management practices than smaller businesses. Businesses which are owned and managed by family members have less structured management practices. There is also some notable variation of structured practices across industry groups.

  • Developing labour market metrics for the market sector, UK: 2016

    Development of new labour market metrics covering market sector employment, hours worked and labour remuneration, which have been compiled at component-industry level for the first time. The primary motivation for this development work is to populate a new industry-level market sector quality-adjusted labour input (QALI) framework to allow more rigorous estimation of market sector multi-factor productivity (MFP).

  • Quarterly public service productivity (experimental statistics): Apr to June 2016

    Experimental estimates for quarterly total public service productivity, inputs and output to provide a short-term, timely indicator of the future path of the annual productivity estimates. A previous publication ‘New nowcasting methods for more timely quarterly estimates of UK total public service productivity’ gives information on the methodology and data sources behind the new quarterly estimates.

The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

Designation can be broadly interpreted to mean that the statistics:

  • meet identified user needs
  • are well explained and readily accessible
  • are produced according to sound methods
  • are managed impartially and objectively in the public interest

Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.

Pre-release access list for UK productivity: Apr to June 2016

The phrase 'Pre-release Access' refers to the practice whereby official statistics in their final form, and any accompanying written commentary, are made available to an eligible person in advance of their publication. The rules and principles which govern pre-release access are featured within the Pre-release Access to Official Statistics Order 2008.
