Male life expectancy Health and wellbeing

This indicator shows period life expectancy at birth for an area, which is the average number of years a person would live if they experienced the area's age-specific mortality rates for that time period throughout their life, in the United Kingdom, for three-year rolling periods between 2001 to 2003 and 2022 to 2024.

About these estimates

Life expectancy at birth is a period measure based on mortality rates observed in the given reference period. It does not predict how long babies born during this period will actually live.

Figures are based on the number of deaths registered and mid-year population estimates, aggregated over three consecutive calendar years.

Figures are not calculated for City of London or Isles of Scilly due to small numbers of deaths and populations.

Country-level estimates are provided as a comparator only. If you are interested in life expectancy at country level please refer to the National life tables - life expectancy in the UK release.

Subnational estimates are subject to uncertainty and should be interpreted alongside their confidence intervals.

The life expectancy estimates reported are period based. Period life expectancy at a given age for an area is the average number of additional years a person would live if he or she experienced the area's age-specific mortality rates for that time period, throughout the rest of their life. More information can be found in our Life expectancy for UK local areas quality and methods guide.

The figure reflects mortality among those living in the area in each period, rather than mortality among those born in each area. It is not therefore the number of years a person in the area in each period will be expected to actually live. This is because the death rates of the area are likely to change in the future and because many of those in the area may live elsewhere for at least part of their lives. The measure reflects the mortality rates prevailing at the time and therefore gives a measure with which to compare different populations both by location and by time.
