This indicator shows the percentage of people aged between 16 and 64 years in paid work or who had a job that they were temporarily away from, in Great Britain (Northern Ireland national figure included), for annual periods from January to December, 2004 to 2023.

Interpretation

Calculation of employment rate: number of employed people aged 16 to 64 years divided by the population aged 16 to 64 years. Population is the sum of employed plus unemployed plus inactive.

These estimates are derived from the Labour Force Survey (LFS) and Annual Population Survey (APS), which have moved from Official Statistics in Development to Official Statistics. Since late 2023, ONS has introduced improvements to survey collection, sampling and weighting methods, helping to improve response levels and data quality. Further information on the strengths, limitations and appropriate uses of these data is available in the Labour Force Survey quality and methodology information (QMI).

Updates to this indicator have been temporarily suspended until the APS reweighting is implemented in 2027.
