What's in the bulletin?
- Public sector borrowing was slightly higher in July 2026 compared with a year earlier. This is because increased spending on public services, benefits and other costs more than offset growth in receipts, despite record self-assessed (SA) income tax receipts in July 2026.
- Borrowing in the financial year (FY) to July 2026 was below the same period last year, but higher than government expectation.
- Debt remained just below £3 trillion at end of July 2026, although debt as a share of the economy was lower than a year earlier.
