Business Demography is an annual publication that focuses on changes to the registered business population, produced from an extract taken from the Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR). We examine businesses registered at HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) for VAT and/or PAYE and at Companies House in particular.
The publication provides information on business start-ups, closures and survival rates by broad industry group and geography. This information is used extensively by central and local government, MPs and private sector users for a range of investigative, monitoring and planning purposes.
The recorded position of enterprises in the IDBR are taken in November of each year and released 12 months later. Therefore, data for November 2013 would be released in November 2014.
Information used to create and maintain the IDBR is obtained from 5 main sources, including HMRC and Companies House. As well as the main sources used, a commercial data provider, Dun and Bradstreet, is used to supplement the IDBR with Enterprise Group information.
