Thank you for your request.

Infant and neonatal mortality figures are published for both the year the death was registered in and the year the death occurred. The infant and neonatal mortality figures based on registrations and occurrences would not match because they are based on two different datasets. The registration dataset includes the number of deaths registered in a calendar year. The occurrences dataset includes deaths that occurred in a calendar year and allows for delays in registering deaths.

You can find infant and neonatal mortality figures by local authority in table 1a of Deaths registered by area of usual residence, UK. This publication is based on deaths registered in a calendar year.

You can find infant and neonatal mortality figures by local authority in table 3 of Child mortality in England and Wales publication. This publication is based on deaths that occurred in a calendar year.

We do not publish infant and neonatal mortality data by sex and postcode. You can access the data you are interested in via Secure Research Service (SRS). Please see the link below for SRS where you can apply to become an approved researcher.

If this does not meet your requirement, we can provide you an ad-hoc. This might limit your research depending on what you would like to do with the data. Special extracts and tabulations are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate). Such enquiries should be made to:
