Thank you for your enquiry.

We only hold mortality statistics by cause of death (except for COVID) for England and Wales. For Scotland and Northern Ireland mortality statistics, you will need to contact National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Centre.

ONS mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. The conditions mentioned on the death certificate are then coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Deaths where the underlying cause was heart attack or DVT are coded using the following ICD-10 codes:

Myocardial Infarction (Heart attack)

  • I21 - Acute myocardial infarction
  • I22 - Subsequent myocardial infarction
  • I23 - Complications following acute myocardial infarction

Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT)

  • I80.1 - Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of femoral vein
  • I80.2 - Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of other deep vessels of lower extremities
  • I80.3 - Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of lower extremities, unspecified
  • I80.9 - Phlebitis and thrombophlebitis of unspecified site
  • I82.9 - Embolism and thrombosis of unspecified vein

Data up to 2020:

Numbers of deaths by underlying cause, sex, age group and area of usual residence for England and Wales, 2013 to 2020, are available via our interactive NOMIS webservice.

Please follow these instructions to use the NOMIS webservice:

  • Select the geography - (England and Wales, regional or by local authority)
  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands
  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death (ICD10 code search is available)
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)

Annual numbers of deaths for all causes for the UK and constituent countries are available in our Vital statistics in the UK publication.  Data are available for 1887 to 2020.

Our latest provisional death registration data for England and Wales, 2021 and 2022, are available in our weekly deaths and Monthly mortality analysis publications.  Data for 2021 and 2022 are still provisional, so full cause of death information is not yet published. Finalised death registration data for 2021 will be released in July 2022 in our Deaths Registered Series and NOMIS. These publications will provide all cause mortality for 2021 and so far in 2022.

To fulfil your request for heart attack and DVT deaths in 2021 and 2022, we would need to create a custom output via our bespoke services pathway. However, please note that because data for 2021 and 2022 are still provisional, figures may be an underestimate due to registration delays.

Special extracts and tabulations of mortality data for England and Wales are available to order (subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs, where appropriate).  Such enquiries would can be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

If you would like to request data, or wish to discuss this further, please contact Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.
