Correction

In the births table we have made a minor correction to the UK general fertility rate in 2018 from 58.7 to 58.5, live births per 1,000 women aged 15 to 44 years. We apologise for any inconvenience caused.

  • In 2018, there were 731,213 live births in the UK, a decrease of 3.2% from 755,042 in 2017 and the lowest number of live births since 2006.

  • There were 2,958 stillbirths in the UK in 2018; the corresponding stillbirth rate was 4.0 stillbirths per 1,000 total births, which is the lowest rate on record.

  • There were 616,014 deaths registered in the UK in 2018, an increase of 1.5% from 607,172 in 2017.

  • There were 3,248 deaths registered to children aged under five years in the UK in 2018; the corresponding mortality rate was 4.4 deaths per 1,000 live births, which is the lowest rate on record.

  • There were 2,831 infant deaths (deaths under one year) registered in the UK in 2018; the corresponding infant mortality rate was 3.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged since 2013 and the lowest rate on record.

  • There were 2,028 neonatal deaths (deaths under 28 days) registered in the UK in 2018; the corresponding neonatal mortality rate was 2.8 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged from 2016.

  • There were 279,311 marriages of opposite-sex couples in the UK in 2017, the latest year for which data are available; this was an increase of 1.4% from 275,395 in 2016.

  • There were 110,524 divorces of opposite-sex couples in the UK in 2017, the latest year for which data are available; this was a decrease of 6.4% from 118,046 in 2016.

  • There were 1,129 civil partnerships formed in the UK in 2018, an increase of 5.5% from 1,070 in 2017.

  • There were 1,304 civil partnership dissolutions in the UK in 2017, the latest year for which data are available; this was a decrease of 7.8% from 1,415 in 2016.
