Main points from latest release

  • In 2015, there were 777,165 live births in the UK, an increase of 0.1% from 776,352 in 2014.

  • There were 3,434 stillbirths in the UK in 2015. The corresponding stillbirth rate was 4.4 stillbirths per 1,000 total births, the lowest rate on record, down from 4.6 in 2014.

  • There were 602,782 deaths registered in the UK in 2015, an increase of 5.7% from 570,341 in 2014.

  • There were 3,020 infant deaths registered in the UK in 2015. The corresponding infant mortality rate was 3.9 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged since 2013 and the lowest rate on record.

  • There were 2,117 neonatal deaths (deaths under 28 days) registered in the UK in 2015. The corresponding neonatal mortality rate was 2.7 deaths per 1,000 live births, unchanged since 2013, and the lowest rate on record.

  • There were 1,014 civil partnerships formed in the UK in 2015, a decrease of 55% from 2,229 in 2014; this decline results from the introduction of marriages of same sex couples in England and Wales and Scotland in 2014.

  • UK figures for marriages, divorces and civil partnership dissolutions in 2015 are not yet available.
