Have you been asked to take part in an ONS survey and you’re wondering what’s involved? Our video will explain what happens, why we need the information and how we keep it safe and secure.
Who’s the ONS and what’s an ONS survey?
The ONS is the UK’s largest producer of official statistics. Through our surveys, we collect data that help individuals and organisations understand the UK’s economy, society and population. We interview people just like you and ask questions that cover a range of topics, including:
- health
- housing
- employment
- education
- living costs
- travel
Why should you take part?
Your information will make sure our statistics are accurate, up to date and reflect the population, which helps us understand life in the UK. The government, businesses and individuals use our statistics to make decisions and plan for the future. The answers you give will represent you and your area, which is why it’s so important you take this opportunity to have your say.
How can you confirm an ONS survey is genuine?
You will receive a letter from us that invites you to take part in our surveys, and we will identify ourselves as the ONS whenever we contact you. Our interviewers will carry an identification card when they arrive at your home. If you’d like to confirm that they’re a real interviewer for the ONS, you can ask for their authority number and call us on 0800 298 5313 to check.
If you’d like more information about the ONS or taking part in one of our surveys, read our "what you need to know" page on the ONS website. You can also watch our ONS guide videos on YouTube.
