Aim of this survey

The Business Insights and Conditions Survey was initially set up in response to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and has become a crucial survey that enables rapid response to, and informs policy decisions about, issues impacting UK businesses and the economy.

Questions are updated regularly to reflect important topics impacting the business community, and as the economy changes, the survey will continue to be updated to measure the impact of new issues businesses face.

What you need to know

This survey asks about the following topics:

  • Trading status of your business
  • Turnover
  • Exporting and importing
  • Supply chains
  • Prices of materials, goods and services
  • Stock
  • Access to financial support
  • Operational performance

This survey is refreshed every two weeks and the above listed information may change based upon latest requirements. Not every topic will be included in every survey. Some questions are repeated monthly to monitor changes over time.

To avoid losing data, please submit by the return date and before the next fortnightly survey is published.

All information you provide is strictly confidential.

Survey information

Selection criteria: businesses from various industrial sectors and regions in the UK registered for Value Added Tax (VAT) and/or Pay As You Earn (PAYE).

Population: 2,281,179.

Sample: approximately 39,000.

Frequency: every two weeks.

Dispatch date: every other Monday (for example 22 February 2021).

Return-by date: every other Sunday (for example 7 March 2021).

Survey frequency, dispatch and return-by dates are a guide and are being regularly reviewed because of the changing circumstances.

Your participation provides a real-time understanding of how these economic factors are affecting your business, and other businesses like yours. All businesses are important. Your response helps to ensure that your industry is properly represented.
