Summary of request
These tables present death registrations by place of occurrence for England for rolling annual periods beginning Quarter 1 (Apr to Jun) of financial year 2018 to 2019 and ending Quarter 2 (Jul to Sep) of financial year 2023 to 2024.
This is a performance indicator for end of life care. It focuses on place of death, namely "Usual place of residence". "Usual place of residence" includes deaths that occurred at home, care home or religious establishment. The number and proportion of deaths that occurred at home, hospital, care home, hospice or elsewhere are also presented. Further information on these tables is available in the data file.
The indicator is produced quarterly on a rolling 12-month basis for all Regions, Strategic Clinical Networks (SCNs), Integrated Care Boards (ICBs), Sub ICB Locations (SICBLs) and Local Authorities (LA) in England. Geographies are based on the August 2023 National Statistics Postcode Lookup (NSPL) boundaries. The latest NSPL is available on the ONS Open Geography Portal.
Please note, this is the last edition of this dataset. The update includes deaths registered between 1 April 2022 and 31 March 2023. Previously, ONS updated these tables every quarter (Feb; May; Aug; Nov), including annual refresh every August to revise provisional data to final. Data for 2023 are provisional. No future updates or revisions will be provided by ONS.
