Disability-Free Life Expectancy (DFLE) estimates are not comparable across the whole time series between the periods 2009 to 2011 and 2015 to 2017.

This is because there were changes in questions used to estimate disability in the Annual Population Survey (APS) between 2009 to 2011 and 2015 to 2017. It is important to note that DFLE estimates for the period 2014 to 2016 and 2015 to 2017 are based on the latest harmonised standard questions exclusively for the first time and are comparable, but they are not comparable with previous periods in the series.

Important notes and usage information

Some sheets in this dataset contain pivot tables. In these sheets, to select a population, place the cursor in the column you want to filter and then select from the list in the top left hand corner.

Subnational reporting in this release, which covers 2019 to 2021 and 2020 to 2022, is restricted to English regions; the local areas we usually publish in this release have been excluded because of concerns about statistical quality following a pattern of decreasing sample sizes of the Annual Population Survey, particularly in the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic period 2020 to 2022. The national and regional estimates between 2011 to 2013 and 2018 to 2020 in this dataset have been updated to include rebased mid-year population estimates from mid-2012 onwards following the 2021 Census in England and Wales, and in Northern Ireland. This replaces the previously published series, which used populations based on 2011 Census. Coverage is limited to England, Wales and Northern Ireland using rebased population estimates from the 2021 Census. Estimates for Scotland will be added following publication of its rebased population estimates from the Scotland 2022 Census.
