Overview:

  • data supplied by the National Cancer Registration Service (NCRS), within Public Health England

  • since 2013 the First Release and Cancer Registration Statistics Annual Reference Volume (ARV) have been combined

  • since 1995 cancer registrations for Wales have been reported by the Welsh Cancer Intelligence Surveillance Unit

Cancer Registration statistics present the number of new cancer registrations in England overall and in the different English regions. Incidence rates by sex and age, standardised registration ratios and incidence to mortality ratios for all cancers are also included.

The NCRS provides us with cancer registration data, which they collect, collate and validate from a variety of sources, including pathology laboratories and hospitals. We then run this data through further validation checks.

The figures are used by the Department of Health and Public Health England to brief ministers and inform policy making. Annual cancer statistics are used to assess the progress of NHS Outcomes Framework indicators. Additionally, academics and researchers use the data to carry out research. Charities use the figures to provide reliable and accessible information about cancer to the public, patients and health professionals.
