Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:
- For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
- Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.
These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

A small error occurred in table 12 of child mortality (death cohort) tables for infant deaths 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015 and 2016 due to a processing error. The early neonatal, neonatal, post-neonatal and infant death figures by birthweight, type of registration and socio-economic classification in these table have been corrected. Important notes and usage information
In table 16 of Child Mortality in England and Wales datasets for 2015 and 2016, due to a manual processing error, the under 1 day figure and 1 day and under 1 week figure for 2015 was incorrectly reported as 1,015 and 421 respectively rather than 1,016 and 420.
