Greenhouse gas emissions, UK: provisional estimates, 2024
What's in the bulletin?
- Provisional 2024 UK greenhouse gas emissions on a residence basis decreased by 0.5% compared with 2023.
- UK emissions were 476 million tonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (Mt CO2e) in 2024 (provisional), 43.3% below 1990 levels, the first year for which we have data.
- The manufacturing sector saw the largest emissions decrease among industries, with emissions falling by 7.4%, from 70 Mt CO2e in 2023 to 65 Mt CO2e in 2024.

What's in the bulletin?
- The total UK annual value of natural capital in marine and coastal margins habitats that we are currently able to measure was around £43 billion in 2022, including biotic (living) and abiotic (non-living) ecosystem services, or about £3 billion excluding abiotic ecosystem services.
- The larger annual value of abiotic services, relative to biotic services, is mainly caused by the oil and gas provisioning ecosystem service (£39 billion), which was especially high in 2022 because of an increase in energy prices in that year.
- The total UK asset value of marine and coastal margins natural capital that we are currently able to value was an estimated £272 billion in 2022, including biotic and abiotic ecosystem services, and an estimated £120 billion, excluding abiotic ecosystem services.
