These plans detail the analysis we aim to publish in the first year of the Census 2021 analysis programme. We will provide any updates to these plans resulting from user feedback, and further research and testing of the data. We plan to start publishing articles from the end of January 2023. We will provide the publication dates of the analytical articles on the release calendar in "Upcoming releases". We intend to confirm publication releases four weeks before publication.

Planned publications for 2023

Ethnicity by age and sex

This analysis will look at ethnicity across England and Wales and how it has changed, in comparison with the 2011 Census. The initial focus will be on the 19-group classification of ethnic groups, providing analysis by geography, age and sex. Where statistical disclosure checks allow, we will provide further analysis for more detailed ethnic groups, including information gained from the new write-in on African background.

Religion by age and sex

This analysis will focus on religious affiliation across England and Wales and how it has changed in comparison with the 2011 Census. The analysis will initially provide information on geography, age and sex by the eight response options:

  • No religion
  • Christian
  • Buddhist
  • Hindu
  • Jewish
  • Muslim
  • Sikh
  • Any other religion

Where statistical disclosure checks allow it, we will provide detailed analysis on the populations affiliated with smaller religious minorities and communities, to support these communities.

Welsh language by age and sex

This analysis will look at Welsh language across Wales by age and sex. It will also consider changes since the 2011 Census.

Welsh language: households and transmission

This analysis will examine household structures in Wales and the Welsh-speaking skills of household members. This will increase understanding of Welsh language transmission and its retention in younger generations.

Language

This analysis will focus on both main language and English language proficiency in England and Wales and how it has changed in comparison with the 2011 Census. It will focus on the most common languages spoken for groups with lower levels of English proficiency. Where statistical disclosure allows, we will provide this information for smaller geographies.

National identity by age and sex

This analysis will look at national identities by age and sex, across English and Welsh geographies, and how they have changed since 2011. This will include further analysis of the data from the write-in responses to the national identity question.

Jewish identity

This additional bespoke analysis will look at the characteristics of those who define their religious affiliation as "Jewish", and for those who define their ethnic group as "Jewish". This analysis is in line with commitments detailed in the Census 2021 White Paper (PDF, 967KB) and will include information on characteristics such as:

  • education
  • employment
  • health

Sikh identity

This additional bespoke analysis will look at the characteristics of those who define their religious affiliation as "Sikh" and for those who define their ethnic group as "Sikh". This analysis is in line with commitments detailed in the Census 2021 White Paper (PDF, 967KB), and will include information on characteristics such as:

  • employment
  • health
  • language

Gypsy and Irish Traveller, and Roma identity

This additional bespoke analysis will look at the "Gypsy and Irish Traveller" and "Roma" populations, analysed as two separate ethnic groups. This analysis is in line with commitments detailed in the Census 2021 White Paper (PDF, 967KB), and will include information on characteristics, such as:

  • education
  • employment
  • health
  • language
  • type of accommodation

Somali identity

This analysis will look at the "Somali" ethnic group. This analysis is in line with commitments detailed in the Census 2021 White Paper (PDF, 967KB) and will include information on characteristics such as:

  • education
  • employment
  • health
  • housing

Welsh language: education, employment, health and housing

This analysis will explore Welsh-speaking skills of those living in Wales by factors, such as:

  • education
  • employment
  • health
  • housing

Cornish identity

This additional bespoke analysis will focus on the population who identify as Cornish. This analysis is in line with commitments detailed in the Census 2021 White Paper (PDF, 967KB) and it will look at factors such as:

  • education
  • employment
  • health
  • housing

This analysis will also draw comparisons with those who do not identify as Cornish.

This analysis will examine the ethnic, religious and language composition of the household and how this has changed since the 2011 Census.

The intersection of ethnicity, language, national identity and religion

This analysis will focus on the intersection between:

  • ethnicity
  • language
  • national identity
  • religion

It will explore how these identities change over time.

Geographical diversity by ethnic group, religion, and language

This analysis will examine the extent of geographical diversity and residential concentration of different:

  • ethnic groups
  • religious affiliations
  • language groups

The level of geography we can analyse will be dependent on disclosure control checks.
