The wholesale and retail trade industry, including the repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles, generated the most turnover in 2024, at £1,629.8 billion; this was a decrease of £74.4 billion (4.4%) when compared with 2023.
The largest proportional increase in turnover was from the real estate industry, which increased by 13.1% between 2023 and 2024.

From the release of our upcoming Blue Book 2026, we will use estimates from the Annual Survey of Goods and Services (ASGS) to compile the UK’s national accounts; ASGS is one of several data sources we use to measure output in the services sector, so the estimates in this publication should not be viewed as the only measure.
2. Measuring the data
The Annual Survey of Goods and Services (ASGS) samples approximately 40,000 businesses across the UK services sector. We outsourced data collection and validation of the ASGS to the independent social and market research agency IFF Research.
ASGS data are produced in compliance with the Code of Practice for Statistics. Further information on this is detailed in our ASGS technical report methodology, which describes the methods used to safeguard the information provided in confidence to us.
The ASGS collects turnover information broken down by product. Product-level data are primarily collected at the six-digit level and aligns with the statistical classification of products by activity (CPA) framework. Exceptions to this are the wholesale, retail, waste collection treatment and disposal industries, which are collected at the three-digit level.
