You asked

Can you tell me what were the most unusual names registered in the UK in 2020?

And were there any name requests which were rejected this year? If so, what were they?

We said

Thank you for your request.

We are responsible for the production of life event data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the birth certificate at the time of birth registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. They can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

We do not report on disallowed baby names. The General Register office may be better placed to assist with the part of your request.

The most up-to-date publication and accompanying dataset on baby names register in England and Wales is available via the following links: Baby Names in England and Wales: 2019 bulletin and Baby name datasets: 2019.

Table 6 of these datasets report on all baby names with a count of 3 or more. These figures have been redacted in order to protect the confidentiality of individuals.

Data for 2020 will be published in August/September of 2021. The finalised release date for this publication will be announced on our Release Calendar.
