We said

You made a freedom of information request for information on the population within 1.6km of Cowfold RH13 8AA.

We do not publish statistics for the population of an area for a set distance from a particular postcode; however, we do have figures for usually resident populations at March 2011, at postcode level, from the 2011 Census for England and Wales. To fulfil your request for an estimate of the population within an area around a postcode, you will also need to consider Output Areas (OAs). For the 2011 Census, OAs are the basic geographic unit for which outputs are published, and these are used as the building blocks to form all higher geographical areas.

The process to access the data you require is set out below:

How to get postcode estimates

The Nomis website has information on "Postcode Headcounts and Household Estimates - 2011 Census";

https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/census/2011/postcode_headcounts_and_household_estimates

Select: Table 1: Postcodes M-R and find RH13 8AA

Postcode Total Males Females Occupied_Households
RH138AA 42 17 25 16

This gives a figure of 42 persons in the postcode RH13 8AA in March 2011 (It should be noted that in order to protect against disclosure of personal information records may have been swapped between different geographic areas).

How to find out which OA(s) contains your postcode

From the ONS Geography Portal use the lookup file between postcodes and Output Areas (Postcode to Output Area to Lower LSOA to Middle LSOA to LAD (December 2011) Lookup in England and Wales):

http://ons.maps.arcgis.com/home/item.html?id=ef72efd6adf64b11a2228f7b3e95deea

Find RH138AA

RH138AA RH13 8AA E00161316

You can see in the lookup file that Output Area E00161316 is comprised of several postcodes (RH13 8BY, RH13 8AA, RH13 8AB, RH13 8AD, RH13 8BL, RH13 8DS, RH13 8DZ, RH13 8PW)

Please note that if a postcode splits the boundary of two adjacent Output Areas, table 2 (from https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/census/2011/postcode_headcounts_and_household_estimates) shows the count and proportion of usual residents of that postcode who reside in each Output Area: Select: Table 2: Postcodes M-R for RH138AA

How to find population estimates for the OA(s) that interest you

The table KS101EW on Nomis has estimates for the 'usual resident population' at March 2011:

https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/census/2011/ks101ew

  • Use the “Query data” option to refine your search and specify the geography: 2011 Output Areas (Some).

  • Geography: Select 2011 Output Areas Using List

  • List areas with: " Horsham", Tick "use maps to select area"

  • Find Cowfold and Output Area E00161316 on the map.

At this point you might like to consider adjacent Output Areas (for example E00161312, E00161314, E00161317) which cover the area you are interested in.

Complete the other variables as required and download the table.
