Based on provisional figures, there were 197,686 deaths registered from 2 December 2017 to 23 March 2018 (week 48 of 2017 to week 12 of 2018). This is 20,275 more deaths than the five-year average for weeks 48 to week 12 (177,411 deaths registered). The exact dates included in each week number may vary from year to year.
This was calculated using our provisional figures for weekly number of deaths which are available in our weekly deaths publication back to 2010:

We also publish figures for the number of deaths registered in each month back to 2006. For the most recent years, these figures are also provisional, but are finalised shortly after we publish our final annual data. e.g. 2017 monthly deaths will be finalised in July:
