An insight into the characteristics of national parks in England and Wales, and looking at how they have changed over the past decade. Using a variety of census topics, we compare the individual national parks and make comparisons with England and Wales as a whole. The 2011 Census show that national parks throughout England and Wales cover 10.8% of the land area, but currently contain just 0.7% of the total population.

We look at how people’s highest level of qualification relates to their economic activity. The main focus of the analysis is on residents in England and Wales aged 25 to 64. We examine employment, economic inactivity and unemployment and analysis of employment rates across local authorities. Results show that fewer than half of those with no qualifications were in employment compared with 8 in 10 of those with at least one qualification.

We look at usual residents in England and Wales who hold foreign passports and those who were born outside the UK. Using information from the 2011 Census, we look at economic activity, occupation and industry, qualifications, English language proficiency, housing tenure and health. In 2011 it was found that 13% of usual residents in England and Wales were born outside the UK, with almost half of these holding a UK passport.

We examine the out of term population (where students and school children are recorded at their “home” address). Analyses are by age, sex and geographical breakdown.

An overview of short-term residents (STRs) in England and Wales who were born outside of the UK and who intend to stay in the UK for a period of between 3 and 12 months. Using 2011 Census data we look at age, sex and economic activity at national, regional and local levels. Main findings show that there were 195,000 short-term residents in England and Wales with 70% of this group aged 15 to 29 years.
