A 1% sample of individual records from Census 2021 with no identifying information and available to all for teaching of statistics and social sciences. This public microdata sample is also available from the UK Data Service (UKDS) without the requirement to register under the guidelines of the Open Government Licence.

Our safeguarded microdata samples were made available on the UK Data Service (UKDS) in October 2023. Only data analysts registered with the UKDS can access them under the terms and conditions of the UK Data Service End User Licence (PDF, 216KB).

Our secure microdata samples will soon be available through the Integrated Data Service only to accredited researchers.

Our Integrated Public Use Microdata Series (IPUMS) safeguarded microdata sample will be available to analysts on the IPUMS international website. Analysts need to register, provide information on their project and agree to the terms and conditions of access. The unharmonised source IPUMS sample will also be available on the UK Data Service website.

The United Kingdom Statistics Authority has designated these statistics as National Statistics, in accordance with the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 and signifying compliance with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics.

Designation can be broadly interpreted to mean that the statistics:

  • meet identified user needs
  • are well explained and readily accessible
  • are produced according to sound methods
  • are managed impartially and objectively in the public interest

Once statistics have been designated as National Statistics it is a statutory requirement that the Code of Practice shall continue to be observed.
