FOI REF: FOI-2023-1518

You asked

Please could I request the information about shoplifting in England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.

Please could you explain why the figures for Wales are combined with England?

Why do the ONS not include Scotland and Northern Ireland?

We said

Thank you for your query.

We publish area level data for Police Force Areas (PFAs) and Community Safety Partnerships (CSPs), which provides a breakdown of crime statistics for England and Wales separately. Police recorded crime data on shoplifting by PFA for Wales can be found in the Police Force Area data tables (P1-P4). The latest available data for the year ending June 2023 shows there were 19,353 recorded offences of shoplifting in Wales between July 2022 and June 2023.

The Office for National Statistics are responsible for collating and publishing statistics for England and Wales.

Crime and justice statistics for Scotland can be found on the Scottish Government website. Should you require further assistance, they can be contacted at Justice_Analysts@gov.scot.

Additionally, the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for producing crime and justice statistics for Northern Ireland. For any further queries regarding crime statistics in Northern Ireland, they can be contacted at statistics.research@justice-ni.x.gsi.gov.uk.
