Thank you for your enquiry.

1. The latest mid-year population estimates by single year of age are for mid-2019. You can find these and the years back to 2000 in the downloadable files in Estimates of the population of the UK. The mid-2020 population estimates are due for publication in June-July 2021. You may be in interested in our Early indicators of the UK population size and structure, though this only estimates age groups rather than single years of age.

When accessing any of our files please read the 'notes, terms and conditions' contained within them.

As such, the information you have requested is considered exempt under Section 22(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000, whereby information is exempt from release if there is a view to publish the information in the future. Furthermore, as a central government department and producer of official statistics, we need to have the freedom to be able to determine our own publication timetables. This is to allow us to deal with the necessary preparation, administration and context of publications. It would be unreasonable to consider disclosure when to do so would undermine our functions.

This exemption is subject to a public interest test. We recognise the desirability of information being freely available and this is considered by ONS when publication schedules are set in accordance with the Code of Practice for Statistics. The need for timely data must be balanced against the practicalities of applying statistical skill and judgement to produce the high quality, assured data needed to inform decision-making. If this balance is incorrectly applied, then we run the risk of decisions being based on inaccurate data which is arguably not in the public interest.  This will have an impact on public trust in official statistics in a time when accuracy of official statistics is more important to the public than ever before

2. Deaths by single year of age from 2000 to 2020

Please see the following publication: Deaths registered by single year of age, UK - Office for National Statistics (ons.gov.uk). This will provide annual data on death registrations by single year of age for the UK from 1974 to 2019 and England and Wales from 1963 to 2019.

We are responsible for the production of mortality data for England and Wales, this is driven by information collected from the death certificate at death registration. National Records Scotland (NRS) and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) are responsible for statistics pertaining to Scotland and Northern Ireland. Therefore, we do not hold the requested data for the whole of the UK for 2020. Should you wish to obtain this data for Scotland and Northern Ireland, NRS and NISRA can be contacted at foi@nrscotland.gov.uk and info@nisra.gov.uk respectively.

Unfortunately, we do not hold analysis showing deaths by single year of age for England and Wales in 2020. In order to fulfil this request, we would need to create bespoke analysis. 2020 data will be available to order as bespoke analysis once the data have been finalised in July 2021. Such services would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure controls, resources and agreement of costs. If you would like to request this bespoke dataset, please contact health.data@ons.gov.uk after July 2021 to discuss your enquiry further. Please note, there may be a charge for this work which would be subject to our charging policy.
