You asked

Please supply statistics for deaths registered as a direct result of a slip, trip or falls whilst at work for 2019.

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

All our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All of the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). From all of these causes an underlying cause of death is selected using ICD-10 coding rules. The underlying cause of death is defined by WHO as:

a) the disease or injury that initiated the train of events directly leading to death, or

b) the circumstances of the accident or violence that produced the fatal injury

Death registrations for 2013 to 2020 where the underlying cause was a slip, trip or fall is available via the following site: NOMIS.

The cause of death you are interested in can be identified using the following ICD-10 codes:

  •       W01 Fall on same level from slipping, tripping, and stumbling

  •       W10 Fall involving stairs and steps

  •       W11 Fall on and from ladder

  •       W13 Fall from, out of or through building or structure.

Unfortunately, NOMIS does not hold data on deaths by place of occurrence which would include the workplace.

We may be able to create a custom output using a 4-digit ICD-10 code which would provide deaths where the underlying cause was an external cause or accidental injury by place of accident. We cannot identify all workplaces; we can only provide by the provided areas below:

This would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreements of costs.

Such enquiries would fall outside of the Freedom of Information regime and should be made to: Health.Data@ons.gov.uk.

The Health and Safety Executive may be better placed for this information. Please contact your local office.
