You asked

I am submitting a freedom of information request in regard to the 1971 census and its relation to religion in specific areas. The areas in question are:

  • Liverpool
  • Reading
  • Newcastle
  • Belfast
  • Birmingham
  • Aberdeen

If possible, a breakdown of religious population by each religion would be fantastic. Any census data available regarding religion and data would be of great help within 10 years of 1971 either side, i.e. 1961, 1981.

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request for a breakdown of religious population from the 1971 Census and ten years either side.

A voluntary question about religion was first asked in the 2001 Census for England and Wales, therefore we do not hold your requested information for 1971.

Data for religious groups for 2001 and 2011 can be found on Nomis which is a service provided by ONS to give free access to census statistics.

ONS conducts the decennial census for England and Wales, you will need to contact the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency (NISRA) and the National Records of Scotland (NRS) to enquire about data for Belfast and Aberdeen.

If you have any questions regarding the requested information, please contact Census Customer Services.
