You asked

Can you tell me the total amount of doctors and nurses that have died from COVID-19 (under all definitions) from 2020 to end of 2022 separated by year? I require the data for England and Wales separated by region.

We said

Thank you for your request

Our mortality data comes from the information collected at death registration. All the conditions mentioned on the death certificate are coded using the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10). Occupations are defined using the Standard Occupation Classification (SOC 2010). Definitions of all groups and individual occupations can be found here: Classifications and standards - Standard occupational classifications SOC2010

Full lists of occupations used in the analysis are reported in the accompanying data tables, and descriptions of these can be found in ONS Standard Occupational Classification (SOC) Hierarchy. The report is structured so that it describes larger categories of occupations before moving on to describe risk in specific occupations.

The occupational codes used are:

  • 2211 Medical Practitioner
  • 2212 Psychologists
  • 2231 Nurses
  • 2232 Midwives

There are more healthcare related codes available in table 4 of the dataset.

In the response to the pandemic, we produced the following analysis: Coronavirus (COVID-19) related deaths by occupation, England and Wales: deaths registered between 9 March and 28 December 2020. This publication provides an insight into deaths involving COVID-19 by different occupational groups. This publication is now discontinued.

There are numerous occupation codes attributed to healthcare professions:

  • In Table 4 you will find a breakdown of COVID-19 deaths by sub-major occupation groups by sex.
  • Table 5 contains minor occupation groups by sex.
  • If you are looking for a specific health occupation, please refer to tables 9 and 10. These tables contain COVID-19 deaths by individual occupation, sex and age. These tables include further breakdown of healthcare professions.

We also have the following user requested dataset, which may be useful: Deaths involving the coronavirus (COVID-19) among health and social care workers in England and Wales, deaths registered between 9 March and 28 December 2020.
