The UK’s first data analytics apprentices have started work at the Office for National Statistics (ONS) in Newport. The eight apprentices are joining a unique career pathway that will see them use cutting edge tools and technologies to provide statistics and insights to help shape policy across the UK.

“We are changing the way we work here at ONS and very proud to be the first organisation to offer data analytics apprenticeships” says Tom Smith of ONS.
“Data are now available from many new sources and we are taking advantage of the opportunities this offers to provide even richer information on the economy and society to help inform the nation’s decision-making.

Lex Fernquest, one of the successful apprentices, says: In my previous job, I used data manipulation to provide business insight on issues such as, telephony performance, seasonal attrition in staff, and trends in resource and recruitment. Now, working with ONS, I have the chance to, analyse data from large scale sources including from business partners. It opens up some amazing opportunities to provide new insight into important issues.

The new Data Science Campus in Newport and the introduction of the data analytics apprenticeship scheme is all part of the ONS programme of transforming the way it works. Earlier this week, the ONS signed a memorandum of understanding with The Alan Turing Institute in London.

ONS statistics are used by a broad range of decision makers in Government and the private sector. The current transformation programme is designed to fully harness the revolution in digital technology and data science for the public good by providing faster and more detailed insights into the UK economy and society.
