Statistics are most often revised for 1 of 2 reasons:

  1. For certain statistics initial estimates are released with the expectation that these may be revised and updated as further data becomes available.
  2. Revisions may also be made when methods or systems are changed.

These types of planned revisions should not be confused with errors in released statistics, which are genuine mistakes. Such mistakes occur rarely and, when they do happen, corrections are made in a timely manner, announced and clearly explained to users in line with the Code of Practice for Official Statistics (Principle 2, Practice 7).

A small number of rounding errors have been identified in Table AE of the Second Estimate of GDP: January to March 2018 excel data tables, PDF data tables and associated time series due to a processing error. This error impacted some previously published quarterly growth rates between Quarter 4 2013 and Quarter 2 2016. These have now been corrected and ONS apologies for any inconvenience caused. Correction See correction
A processing error has been identified in the measurement of UK Trade affecting the period January 2015 to September 2016. Although it will change the expenditure components of GDP for the same period there is no impact on headline GDP as the affected elements of trade will be offset in the acquisitions less disposals of valuables component. The correction will be incorporated into the Quarter 3 (July to Sept) 2016 Quarterly National Accounts release on 23 December 2016.
