1. What does ONS International Development Team do?

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) International Development Team (IDT) was created in ONS in September 2016 to use the UK’s Official Development Assistance budget to support statistical modernisation in countries in the developing world. The team prioritises, plans and leads the provision of high quality technical assistance by ONS to build the capacity of statistical systems in developing countries.

We work at two levels:

  • we have developed medium term partnerships with some key National Statistical offices on statistical modernisation

  • we also harness ONS expertise to support global statistical programmes and share best practices through the international statistical system

2. Current projects

In March 2018 we signed Memorandum of understandings establishing four in-depth partnerships with three main African National Statistical Offices (The Ghana Statistical Service, the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics and the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda, and with the UN Economic Commission for Africa funded through a Department for International Development (DFID) grant.

We provide technical assistance to support the World Bank International Comparison Programme, and the IMF Enhanced Data Dissemination Initiative.

We are also supporting a DFID funded project on the population and housing census in Ethiopia by monitoring and advising on quality management and strategies to disseminate high quality results to a range of interested users

We are working with the Data Science Campus to support National Statistical Offices in Developing countries who are building their capability and experience in data science.

We are working with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) team to support countries which want to develop their own version of the UK SDG national reporting platform.

We are working closely with DFID’s Growth and Resilience Division on a global drive to improve the quality, consistency and dissemination of statistics on employment and productivity. This is targeted at providing more meaningful contexts for, and more detailed evaluation of, DFID’s economic development programmes in terms of the number and nature of jobs created. This is in support of DFID’s Better Delivery on Jobs project and the ultimate objective of creating more productive, high wage employment and productive economies in low income countries.

We also support ONS and engagement in key international events for the benefit of partner countries including in 2018 the Data for Development Festival in Bristol where we hosted a side visit to ONS and the data science campus, and the Commonwealth Heads of Statistics Conference in London.
