The consultation and recommendation

On 17 June 2025, the UK Statistics Authority (subsequently referred to as “the Authority”), on the advice of the National Statistician, made a recommendation to the UK government on the future of population and migration statistics in England and Wales. You can read the recommendation, as well as letters about the recommendation from the Chair of the Authority, Sir Robert Chote, to the Minister for the Cabinet Office and Welsh government ministers, on the Authority’s website.

To accompany the recommendation, we have published a Consultation outcomes report, which details the thematic analysis from the consultation, and the evidence supporting the recommendation. The report contains analysis and findings from the responses, and feedback that was received during the consultation.

Our Consultation update (PDF, 150.6KB) was published in December 2023 and details:

  • the number of consultation responses by sector
  • how we engaged with users of population and migration statistics before and during the consultation
  • how we carried out our analysis of the responses
