1. Welcome to the ONS Data Challenge

The ONS Data Challenge 2025 is now closed.
Thank you for signing up to take part in the ONS Data Challenge, where your students can explore ONS datasets and tools, discovering how data shapes the world around us.
Taking part in the challenge is more than just a competition – it’s a chance for students to develop real-world skills, gain recognition and win exciting prizes. Whether you’re teaching Business Studies, Geography, Maths or Sociology, this is your chance to help students connect classroom learning with real-world impact.

Your student will choose a local area or location that interests them, for example, the local authority, ward or a custom-drawn neighbourhood where they live. They will build a multi-indicator picture of that place today and compare it to at least one other area of their choice or compare the same area over time. A multi-indicator picture will require students to consider four available indicators for their subject area and final report.
Your student will then need to produce one evidence-based policy recommendation that would realistically improve outcomes for people in that place within five years.
Students can complete the task individually, or in groups of up to four.
