What is the operational cost of maintaining UK infrastructure?

Thank you for your Freedom of Information request regarding UK infrastructure. We have just released new data which updates previous figures and provides information for 2014 and have waited for its publication to provide a more helpful response.

Your request asked for an estimate of the ‘valuation of UK public infrastructure’. The National Balance Sheet dataset provides estimates of the UK’s fixed non-financial assets. The asset ‘other structures’ includes roads, railways, pipelines, bridges and sports stadia. The public sector includes the assets owned by central government, local government and public non-financial corporations.

At the end of 2014, the estimated value of other structures for the public sector was £519 billion at current prices. Please note that some assets, such as railways, airports and energy production, may no longer be counted as being part of the public sector, for example as a result of privatisation.

The National Balance Sheet publication is available on the ONS website.

You also requested an estimate of the ‘operational cost’ to maintain the public infrastructure. Public sector expenditure data is not available at the level of detail needed, therefore, it is not possible to provide you with a figure for the operational cost.
