You asked

Under the Freedom of information Act, I would ask if you have any information relating to suicides committed by people using the Universal Credit scheme.

Also, under the same terms, I would ask for information regarding the number of people who have become insolvent/bankrupt or have suffered financial difficulties due to the use of Universal credit.

Thank you for your request.

The information we hold on deaths is limited to what is recorded on the death certificate by a doctor or information about the cause and circumstances of the death provided by a coroner. This does not normally include information on what social security benefits the deceased had received.

We do not have information on the number of people who have become insolvent/bankrupt due to the use of Universal Credit. We would not be able to provide the number of people who suffer financial difficulties due to the use of Universal Credit. Although we do collect financial data linked to benefit information, these data do not tell us if Universal Credit was the cause of any financial difficulty. We would also need to define what is meant by 'financial difficulty'.
