You asked

Please provide a numerical breakdown of staff gender identity, as recorded in response to the 2021 England and Wales Census–style gender identity question, for each ONS directorate (for example, Population Statistics; People and Business Services).

For each directorate, please provide:

  1. The total number of staff;
  2. The number of staff who indicated that their gender identity is the same as the sex registered at birth;
  3. The number of staff who indicated that their gender identity is different from the sex registered at birth; and
  4. The number of staff who did not respond or chose not to state their gender identity.

Please base your response on data held in the Fusion HR system (or whichever HR system currently holds this information).

To be clear, I am requesting only aggregate counts, not any individual-level or identifiable information.

We are unable to disclose the information requested. The data for Q3 disaggregated by directorate would produce very low figures and would enable individuals to be identified. Providing answers to the remaining three questions would also allow individuals to be identified, as the answer to Q3 could be derived from this information. The requested information is therefore exempt under s.40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
