You asked

I would like to know the total number of UK citizens born within England and Wales between 10th June 1998 and 30th June 2001.

The above information does not need to be broken down by sex or place of registration of birth.

  • I would like the above information to be presented by total number of births per year, with the first count showing births between 10th June and 31st December 1998 inclusive.
  • Births for 1999 and 2000 should present the total number of births between 1st January and 31st December that year inclusive.
  • Births for 2001 should be from 1st January 2001 to 30th June 2001 inclusive.
  • If possible I would like the above to be split according to whether the number of births per year were recorded in England or Wales. If this is not possible please provide the data for England and Wales combined.

Thank you for your enquiry.

We do not hold the information you require, because the citizenship of either the baby or parents is not collected when a birth is registered. Our statistics use birth registration data and therefore we cannot provide numbers of UK citizens born within England and Wales.

We do collect the country of birth and the place of usual residence of the mother. Therefore, we could potentially create an alternative table as an ad hoc analysis based on these variables, if that would meet your needs.

Such an analysis would be outside of the Freedom of Information regime and would be subject to legal frameworks, disclosure control, resources and agreement of costs where appropriate. If this is something you would be interested in, please contact vsob@ons.gov.uk, for any births related enquiries, so that we may discuss your enquiry further.
