We hold mortality data for England and Wales, which based on the information collected at death registration. For numbers of deaths registered in Scotland and Northern Ireland please contact National Records of Scotland and Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Centre.

The latest available data for 2021 is up to Week 52; these figures can be found in our latest weekly deaths publication.

Finalised death registration data for England and Wales are published annually in our Deaths Registered Series. This publication includes death registrations by sex, underlying cause and five-year age group for England and Wales, 2001 to 2020. You can access the dataset directly here: 21st Century Mortality files.

There were 607,922 deaths registered in England and Wales in 2020. Between Week 1 and Week 51 of 2021, there were 577,419 deaths registered in England and Wales.

Death registrations for England and Wales, 2013 to 2020, are also available to download via NOMIS. This is an interactive web service that provides numbers of deaths and rates by underlying cause, age group, sex and area of usual residence. Please see the following instructions when using NOMIS:

  • Select the geography - England and Wales, regional or by local authority
  • Select Age - All ages or 5-year age bands
  • Select Gender - Total or Male/Female
  • Select rates - All deaths, rates or percentage of population for example.
  • Select cause of death - Please enter ICD10 codes for the causes of death that are of interest
  • Select format (Excel or CSV for example)
