Please could you provide the average daily increase in National Debt over the last year?

ONS does not publish data for the daily increase in national debt. However, I am able to provide a link to the latest published debt data which gives the national debt position at the end of each month.

Please choose the .csv or .xls download option to view the time series.

It is possible to estimate the average daily increase in debt by calculating the change in debt over a 12 month period and dividing by 365. As an example, I have carried out this calculation for you for two different 12 months periods.

  • In the latest 12 month period (March 2018 to February 2019) the average daily increase in debt would be £18 million a day;

  • whereas looking at the last calendar year (January 2018 to December 2018) you would get a different daily increase in debt figure of £188 million a day.

It is important to note that depending on the 12 month period chosen when calculating average daily debt changes the resulting answers can vary considerably. You can use the data time series provided to make your own calculations.

Finally, please note that in the public sector finances release we do not use the term 'National Debt', instead we report mainly on the net debt of the public sector (Liabilities less liquid assets). Public sector net debt is often referred to by commentators as 'national debt'. In terms of what we publish for debt, it is the outstanding debt stock position at the end of each month, both in £ million and as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP).
