You asked

I'd like to request the suicide statistics of transgender people in the UK between April 2024 and April 2025.

I'm interested in all demographics within the transgender population including non-binary individuals.

In addition I would like all information available on hate crimes against transgender people between April 2024 and April 2025 and the statistics on violence against transgender prisoners.

We said

Thank you for your request.

We hold mortality data, which are collected through the death registration process in England and Wales. This enables us to publish regular statistics on suicides in England and Wales.

Currently, we receive information on the sex of the deceased, which is provided by the informant when the death is registered. There is not currently a separate question on gender identity on the death certificate. We have the potential to look at further groups in the future, such as through linking mortality data with census records. While the census gender identity estimates can provide some insights, we advise they should not be used as precise estimates.

The Government Statistical Service are currently prioritising work to develop new harmonised standards on sex and gender identity, and will be seeking views from data users, statistical producers and respondents on their needs for questions and data on these topics. Ultimately, this work aims to support the effective comparison of data collected across different datasets and in different ways. If you would like to know more about this work or be involved in sharing your needs for data then you can reach out to outreach.engagement.community@ons.gov.uk.

Regarding your query on hate crime against transgender people, we are responsible for publishing statistics from the Crime Survey in England and Wales (CSEW). We do not create hate crime figures using a single year's worth of data because of the relatively low volume of hate crime incidents reported by respondents in the CSEW. We produce hate crime estimates using a larger sample size by combining data from three survey years. We therefore unfortunately do not hold the requested information for April 2024 to April 2025.

Our most recent CSEW estimates of hate crimes within the gender identity strand are for the year ending March 2020 and can be found in Tables 7, 8 and 9 of the Home Office's Hate crime, England and Wales, 2019 to 2020: appendix tables.

The Home Office publish data on the number of police recorded hate crime annually. These data include hate crime against those that are transgender (Table 2 in the appendix tables). The latest data published are for the year ending March 2024. For more information on police recorded hate crime statistics, and when they will be updated for the year ending March 2025, please contact the Home Office directly at crimeandpolicestats@homeoffice.gov.uk.

We do not hold data which relate to the prison population, and therefore we are unable to provide you with statistics on violence against transgender prisoners. The Ministry of Justice (MOJ) are responsible for information pertaining to the prison population, and they can be contacted at CJS_Statistics@justice.gov.uk or for Freedom of Information requests please email them at data.access@justice.gov.uk.

If you have any other crime-related queries in the future for England and Wales, you can email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
