You asked

Please could you tell me how many cases were reported in 2017 of sexual assault carried out by women?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry relating to the number of sexual offences committed by women in 2017.

The Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) is a household victimisation survey that asks respondents about their experiences of crime. In this survey, we do collect information on the sex of the offender(s) for victims of rape and assault by penetration (including attempts). This is within a self-completion module on sexual assault. Please note that this does not include all sexual assaults (for example, indecent exposure or unwanted touching).

Data on the sex of the offenders of rape and assault by penetration (including attempts) in the survey year ending March 2017 have been published in Table 13 of the ‘Sexual offences in England and Wales: year ending March 2017’ release, available here:

https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/crimeandjustice/datasets/sexualoffencesappendixtables.

As the sexual assault self-completion module within the CSEW is not asked every year, this is the latest survey year for which data are available.

Additionally, while we do hold data on the numbers of sexual offences (including sexual assaults) reported to and recorded by the police in England and Wales, we do not hold data related to the perpetrators of these offences.

Data on offenders are held and published by the Ministry of Justice; they may be able to help you further and can be contacted via statistics.enquiries@justice.gsi.gov.uk.

If you would like crime related information in the future, you can simply email crimestatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to ask.
