I would like to make an FOI request to find out the statistics for the number of people in the UK whose cause of death was sepsis in years 2012, and 2017 respectively.

Thank you for your enquiry.
We routinely publish annual mortality statistics for England and Wales based on calendar year, for which the latest available data is for 2016. 2017 data is due to be published October - November 2018 (provisional).
Underlying cause of death is coded using the International Classification of Diseases, version 10 (ICD-10).
Deaths with an underlying cause of sepsis are assigned the ICD-10 codes A40 (Streptococcal sepsis) or A41 (Other sepsis). Figures for deaths by underlying cause for 2012 are available in table 5 of Deaths registered in England and Wales (series DR); https://www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/birthsdeathsandmarriages/deaths/datasets/deathsregisteredinenglandandwalesseriesdrreferencetables
Figures for 2013-2016 are available in an explorable dataset; https://www.nomisweb.co.uk/query/select/getdatasetbytheme.asp?theme=73.
Deaths for Northern Ireland are available; https://www.nisra.gov.uk/statistics/births-deaths-and-marriages/deaths and for Scotland
