Senior staff expenses 2021 to 2024

This is an information request relating to staff expenses. 

Please include the following information for the last four financial years, 2021-22, 2022-23, and 2023-24:

• The total amount claimed in expenses by senior staff annually. 
• A breakdown of expenses by category (e.g., travel, accommodation, meals, hospitality, subsistence, training, etc.).
• The total amount claimed by the most expensive individual claimant (job title only) in each of those years.
• If available, a breakdown of expenses for members of the senior leadership team (e.g., Chief Executive, Directors), including job titles and total expenses per individual per year.

1. The total amount claimed in expenses by senior staff annually. 

Please see table 1. For the purpose of this response, we have interpreted senior staff to mean Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executive, Directors General, Directors and Non-Executive Directors. All figures disclosed in the following responses are associated with expense claims made by the stated individuals via our systems-based expenses claim process.

2. A breakdown of expenses by category (e.g., travel, accommodation, meals, hospitality, subsistence, training, etc.). 

Please see table 2. The associated table details expenses claimed by category by our senior staff members.

3. The total amount claimed by the most expensive individual claimant (job title only) in each of those years. 

Please see table 3. Job titles for senior staff roles held by individuals may have changed over the 4-year period, therefore we have assigned a code per senior staff member.

4. If available, a breakdown of expenses for members of the senior leadership team (e.g., Chief Executive, Directors), including job titles and total expenses per individual per year. 

Please see table 4. As per question 3, we have assigned a code per senior staff member.

Please note, zero values may indicate a period when either the senior post did not exist, the specific senior staff member was not in post, or no claims were submitted. 

Expenses associated with the Chief Executive and Deputy Chief Executive posts have not been included in the above table, as they are disclosed on the Office for National Statistics webpage, found here:  Business expenses claimed - Office for National Statistics. It should be noted that expenses disclosed on this webpage include costs that were booked and paid for via our corporate travel and accommodation provider. Therefore, not all costs listed are associated with expense claim reimbursements. 

Specific job titles of our senior staff can be matched with other information in the public domain to positively identify them. We therefore need to determine whether the release of job titles is compliant with the UK GDPR to release. In particular, we should consider whether it is necessary and proportionate to the aims of this request. Our assessment is that the purpose of this request can be met without the need for us to disclose specific job titles, so have used codes to distinguish between each role. This suppression has been made under Section 40(2) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA).
