Thank you for your query regarding solicitors and prisoners in England and Wales.
We estimate the number of people currently employed in different occupations using the Annual Population Survey (APS). Individuals are classified to occupations using their responses during interview based on the Standard Occupational Classification 2010 (SOC2010).
According to the APS, in England and Wales, in the twelve-month period October 2017 to September 2018, there were an estimated 107,000 people employed in SOC2010 classification 2413 – solicitors.
We hold a register of businesses, the Inter Departmental Business Register (IDBR), where individual businesses are classified to their main business activity based on the Standard Industrial Classification of Economic Activities 2007 (SIC2007).
According to the latest annual extract from the IDBR, in England and Wales, in March 2018, there were 12,020 enterprises in SIC2007 classification 69102 – solicitors.
Neither SOC2010 or SIC2007 splits the classification groups for solicitors to a more detailed level to allow us to provide an estimate for the numbers of civil or criminal solicitors.
Solicitors in England and Wales who wish to practise require an annual practise certificate from the Law Society. Therefore, they may be able to provide you with more detailed information on the numbers and types of solicitors who are currently practising, from their database.
We do not hold any information on the number of prisoners who currently are, or have been in prison during the last 20 years. Statistics on prison populations are produced by the Ministry of Justice, who should be able to assist you with the most appropriate measures available.
