Under the Freedom of Information Act 2000, please provide monthly mortality statistics for residents of the Portsmouth local authority area for the period between 20 September 2021 and 1 November 2021 inclusive.

Specifically, I am requesting the total number of registered deaths where the underlying cause was a respiratory illness. Please provide this data using the following criteria:

  1. Total deaths categorized under ICD-10 Chapter X: Diseases of the respiratory system (codes J00--J99).

  2. Total deaths where COVID-19 was the underlying cause (codes U07.1 / U07.2), broken down separately from the general respiratory figures.

  3. If possible within disclosure control rules, please break down these numbers by month (September, October, and November 2021) and broad age groups.

Thank you for your request.

The total number of deaths registered between 20 September 2021 and 1 November 2021 among residents of Portsmouth local authority, where the underlying cause of death was recorded as a disease of the respiratory system (J00--J99), was 18. For the same area and registration period, the number of deaths where COVID-19 (U07.1 and U07.2) was recorded as the underlying cause was 15.

Please note that the period includes partial months and does not represent complete monthly figures for September or November 2021.

Due to the risk of identifying deceased individuals, we are unable to provide either a monthly breakdown or a breakdown by broad age group as this would allow individuals to be identified. Section 39 of the Statistics and Registration Service Act 2007 (SRSA) renders it a criminal offence to disclose information held by the Statistics Board (ONS) for statistical purposes that would identify an individuals, including those who are deceased. As we are prohibited by law from publishing statistics in which individuals can be identified, Section 44(1) of the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA) applies.
