You asked

What is the current ratio of reported crime to a successful prosecution in a time series from 1970?

We said

Thank you for your enquiry.

Our publications and data concern crime as it is experienced by victims or as it is recorded by police. Unfortunately, we do not hold data on offenders and their outcomes.

However, the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) publish data on prosecutions in their quarterly data summaries. Their data spreadsheets provide information on convictions and non-convictions and are available back to 2019. For data going back further than 2019, the CPS may be able to help you further and can be contacted at enquiries@cps.gov.uk.

The Ministry of Justice (MoJ) are primarily responsible for data on offenders. They publish statistics each quarter which may be of help to you. If you have any questions, the MOJ may be able to help you further and can be contacted at ESD@justice.gov.uk.

The Home Office also publish outcomes data in their Outcomes open data tables. The pivot table in each download summarises the outcome of each recorded offence and the total number of offences in each year. Data are available back to March 2006 on their website. For data going back further than 2006, the Home Office may be able to help you further and can be contacted at CrimeandPoliceStats@homeoffice.gov.uk.
