Please provide the national statistics on instances of reported rape split by gender of both victim and perpetrator.

We said

Thank you for your request relating to reported rape split by gender of both the victim and the perpetrator.

Crime statistics published by us generally relate to victims rather than offenders of crime. The publication Sexual offences in England and Wales, year ending March 2017 contains analyses on sexual offences from the Crime Survey for England and Wales (CSEW) and crimes recorded by police, which includes rape offences. Several of the appendix tables published alongside this release contain a breakdown by sex of the victim.

The only breakdown we hold that shows information on the offender is taken from the CSEW. These data can be found in appendix table 13. Although this table provides a breakdown by age and sex of the offender, due to the small base sizes it is not possible to provide a breakdown for male victims. We do not hold any police recorded crime data relating to offenders.

Data on offenders are primarily held by the Ministry of Justice (MoJ), who may be better placed to answer your query in relation to the sex of offenders. You can contact them at: statistics.enquiries@justice.gsi.gov.uk.

For future reference, you do not need to use a Freedom of Information request to ask for data. You can email CrimeStatistics@ons.gov.uk and we will endeavour to help.
