You asked

I'm writing with an ONS Freedom of Information Request regarding the 2021 census. Please provide the latest population size of individuals born in the Greater Horn of Africa region in the entire UK according to the latest census. The countries making up this region are: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Djibouti, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, Sudan and South Sudan. 

  1. Number of Ethiopia-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census
  2. Number of Eritrea-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census
  3. Number of Djibouti-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census
  4. Number of Somalia-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census
  5. Number of Kenya-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census 6 Number of Uganda-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census
  6. Number of Sudan-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census
  7. Number of South Sudan-born people in the United Kingdom, according to the 2021 census

9-24. For growth trajectories, please provide the same 8 nationality data points above but for historical censuses, specifically the previous 2011 and 2001 censuses.  This means 24 data points in total.

The UK censuses are run separately by each National Statistics Office (National Records of Scotland (NRS), Northern Ireland Statistics & Research Agency (NISRA), and the Office for National Statistics (ONS) for both England and Wales).  

ONS can provide census data for England and Wales. To obtain figures for the rest of the UK you would need to contact NISRA and NRS separately.

Please note the following: 

South Sudan did not become an independent state until 9 July 2011 so census data for country of birth is not available for South Sudan for 2011 and 2001.

Country of birth (extended) 

This shows the number of people usually resident in England and Wales born in the following countries you've requested data for: Ethiopia, Eritrea, Somalia, Kenya, Uganda, South Sudan, Sudan. 

Data for Djibouti is not available in the standard 2021 census datasets. It may be possible to request data for Djibouti via our commissioned table service, subject to statistical disclosure control processes. 

2011 Census 

Detailed country of birth data that includes all the countries for which you've requested data is not available in standard 2011 census tables. However, there is a previously commissioned table with the detailed data you requested:

2001 Census 

Detailed country of birth data that includes all the countries for which you've requested data is not available in standard 2001 census tables. However, there is a previously commissioned table with the detailed data you requested:
