I understand that the figure used in England and Wales for the 5 year average "age-standardised" mortality rate is adjusted back to the 2013 European standard population.

Can you please confirm if the same population adjustment calculation is applied to the current year's mortality figures when they are compared to the 5 year average?

We can confirm that is correct.  We have used the 2013 European standard population (ESP) to calculate age standardised rates since 2013, including the most recently published rates. This is the latest version of ESP available and there are no plans for an updated version of the ESP in the foreseeable future.
