You asked

For each civil service department, please could you tell me which number of years service are celebrated with long service awards, and what the reward is for each?

We said

Thank you for your request.

We currently operate one formal award associated with any leavers including retirement, which is the Imperial Service Medal (ISM).

The Imperial Service Medal is awarded to junior staff who have 25 or more years of meritorious service to their credit.

As part of the leaver process, checks are undertaken to confirm:

  • the individual’s grade, and

  • their length of service

Where an individual is AO grade or below and has at least 25 years’ service, the ONS initiates the Imperial Service Medal nomination process in line with the established procedure.

We do not operate any other formal awards, and do not hold any information about equivalent awards in any other Civil Service department.
