I have looked on your website to see if I could find the information I need, but have found it too confusing and difficult to understand.

Therefore, I would like to make a FOI request based on the Census 2011 results for the following information in a digital format (spreadsheet):

  • number of people who have declared themselves as having their first language and being originally from Albania/Kosovo living in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland

  • their location and

  • age groups

You have requested information from the 2011 Census under the Freedom of Information Act. Statistics from the 2011 Census in England and Wales will be freely available on the Office for National Statistics (ONS) website in accordance with a planned timetable for release. I am sorry that you found the website too confusing. If you do need any help if finding census statistics please do get in touch with census customer services at census.customerservices@ons.gov.uk. They will be pleased to help you. It is not necessary to make a Freedom of Information request.

ONS is responsible for the census in England and Wales. The census in Scotland is the responsibility of National Records Scotland and in Northern Ireland the census is the responsibility of the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency.

ONS has published some Country of Birth statistics and these are available for regions in England and for Wales in Quick Statistics table QS213EW. The table can be downloaded as a spreadsheet from this page on the ONS website.

ONS has also published statistics for the usual resident population aged 3 and over by their main language, for regions, counties, London boroughs, districts and unitary authorities in England and Wales and you will find numbers of those who main language is Albanian in table QS204EW Main language.

However, statistics showing those whose first language is Albanian and whose country of birth is Albania/Kosovo are not available in standard tables. A commissioned table service will be available later this year, but for a cross tabulation such as you require where the numbers may be low, the risk of disclosure would have to be assessed. Commissioned tables can be pre-ordered from June 2013 from Census Customer Services. The supply of commissioned tables will begin in September 2013.
